The Minister of Foreign Affairs Hon Sam Kutesa delivered a keynote address as former President of the 69th session of the UN General Assembly, at this years UN Day at the Royal Imperial Hotel. In his statement, he said that UN day 2016 was significant as it was an opportunity to take stock of the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals ((SDGs). He said that the formulation of the new development agenda was participatory involving among others; member states, parliamentarians, private sector, civil society, youth groups and was therefore on a sound ground in terms of universal ownership. The task he said now was to ensure that the SDGs are implemented in an effective and timely manner for socio-economic transformation.
Hon Kutesa acknowledged the commendable efforts made by Uganda in integrating 76% of the SDGs in the Second National Development Plan. He underscored the need for timely fulfillment of commitments at national, regional and international level in mobilizing the necessary resources as well as robust review mechanisms to ensure the targets are met.
The Prime Minister art Hon Ruhakana Rugunda officiated at the event. The UN Resident Coordinator Ms Rosa Malango was also in attendance.
